Kathy Schmitt was raised in Laurel, Maryland, and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). She earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications studies with a minor in Appalachian studies. After completing two years of volunteer ministry with the Apostolic Volunteers in New Orleans and Chicago, she earned a master of divinity with Bible specialization from Catholic Theological Union, Chicago.
Kathy was a campus minister/pastoral associate for six years at St. Mark Parish in Richmond, Kentucky, home of Eastern Kentucky University. For three years she was director of the Appalachian Office of Justice and Peace for the Diocese of Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with local organizations, helping them develop their capacity for social change, and with church groups coming into the region for service projects.
Kathy began working in the NCEA Seminary Department in 2005, has worked with the Communications Department, and in June 2011, she became director of religious assessments.
Kathy is the author of the Catholic Schools Week Liturgy Guide. She enjoys leading bible studies and teaching catechism to adults and young people. She makes her home in the Maryland suburbs.
