NABCCCE
2003 Outstanding Board Award
The
Archdiocese of St. Louis Board of Education
St. Louis, Missouri
Whereas many Catholic school boards, commissions, and councils are now in their infancy, childhood, early adolescence, or young adulthood, this total education advisory board is solidly middle-aged. A body of dedicated, talented, and collaborative members, currently comprised of 13 laypersons, 10 priests (one from each deanery), and a religious sister, has rendered outstanding service to the Archdiocese of St. Louis for more than four decades.
Recent
accomplishments have included the development of a Witness
Statement for Those Who Serve in Catholic Education, which
establishes a model for Catholic educators in serving their
schools or religious education programs, and living their
lives. The board continues to build upon this effort to enhance
Catholic Identity by developing similar statements for parents
and students.
In addition, the board has undertaken a strategic planning
initiative involving all of its Catholic high schools and
has worked to enhance teachers’ salaries.
The 24 board members, along with the superintendent and vicar of education, represent a wide variety of perspectives and expertise. After their terms, many continue to serve on board committees or on local school boards.
This outstanding group invites comparison to another winning team – the St. Louis Cardinals, which has captured more World Championships than any other National League franchise.
