From the Executive Director
Welcome to the pages that provide information and services for boards, commissions, and councils of Catholic education.
The Department of Boards and Councils is the section of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) that provides services and leadership to people who work on and with boards, councils, and commissions of Catholic education. We equip veteran boards as well as newly forming boards.
Catholic governance groups come with many names and configurations. A governance group may be called a board, council, or commission. Its authority may be advisory, consultative, limited jurisdictional, or independently incorporated. It may participate in the governance of a:
- Local school
- Parish school
- Regional school system
- Elementary school
- Middle school
- Secondary school
- Total education program
- Religious education program.
- It may be a Diocesan board that, with the superintendent, governs the schools and/or education programs in the diocese.
- Or it may be part of a religious congregation's school governance structure.
Developing the most helpful model and equipping talented people to work effectively within that model can be a challenge for any school system. The department strives to promote and facilitate the development and implementation of successful models of governance for Catholic schools and religious education programs in all types of situations. An important element of the department's mission is to improve the quality of board member leadership through information, resources, services, and training opportunities.
Experience demonstrates again and again that schools reap rich benefits when a wealth of resources and talents are brought in from the community to contribute to shaping a quality education for the children in that community.
We hope you will find services and information on these pages that will benefit your school or education program. We especially encourage your board, commission, or council to become a member of the department so it can receive the many services we provide only to members. We welcome feedback and suggestions from our members as we seek to serve you. Please feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
