This annual award presented by the NCEA Elementary Schools Department, was established in honor of Sister Miriam Joseph Farrell, PBVM, who served as executive secretary of the Department until her illness and death in 1970. Nationally prominent in education, Sister Miriam Joseph was appointed by President Johnson to the President's Title II Advisory Commission. Earlier she served as supervisor of elementary schools for the Archdiocese of San Francisco, as director of education for her religious community, and as teacher and principal of elementary schools.
The award is presented to one teacher in each of the twelve geographic regions into which the department is divided. The department acknowledges that in honoring these twelve teachers each year, it also honors the tens of thousands of outstanding teachers in all Catholic elementary schools.
