1. Orientation program. One month before the first meeting, the board chair and president conduct a thorough orientation program for new members. Ongoing retreats are held.
2. Board committees. Working committees meet regularly, report at board meetings, and make recommendations. Regular committees are in the areas of advancement, finance, governance, investments, mission and strategic planning, human resources, and marketing. Ad hoc committees are established for specific tasks.
3. Strategic planning. This is an ongoing process spearheaded by a committee under the direction of a facilitator.
4. Capital improvement/expansion program. An $8 million building campaign was launched by the board. Ad hoc committees were established to oversee various aspects.
5. Board of directors. Under the leadership of effective chairpersons, it has consistently established sound policies and is a good steward of the mission. It is clear about the distinction between governance and administration.
