Emmaus Award for Excellence in Catechesis

The Emmaus Award for Excellence in Catechesis is given each year to an individual who has exercised outstanding national leadership in the field of catechesis; an individual who has consistently generated significant contributions to the mission of spreading the Gospel, including, writing, publishing and teaching.
The Most Reverend Donald W. Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, has been named as the recipient of the Emmaus Award for 2007. He is chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Catechesis and chairman of the NCEA board of directors. Archbishop Wuerl was deeply involved in developing the National Directory for Catechesis and the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, which was published in 2006. He is the author of several books, including the best-selling The Teaching of Christ. He also serves on numerous national and international bodies and is an elected member of the council for the Vatican office for the Synod.
Archbishop Wuerl holds graduate degrees from The Catholic University of America, the Gregorian University in Rome and a doctorate in theology from the University of St. Thomas in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 17, 1966, and ordained a bishop by Pope John Paul II on January 6, 1986 in St. Peter's Basilica, Rome.
Archbishop Wuerl is known nationally for his emphasis on education, his leadership in the field of catechesis and for his deep pastoral care for the People of God, manifested in his interfaith activities, service to the poor, and for his stance on immigration policies based on the dignity of the human person.
The National Association of Parish Catechetical Directors is proud to confer this national honor on Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl in gratitude for his outstanding contributions to catechesis.
