RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENTS - 2007

Anne D. Malloy, Director of Religious Education
Church of St. Anthony, Nanuet, NY

Anne Malloy is the Director of Religious Education at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Nanuet, New York.  Anne is awarded the 2006-2007 Religious Educational Excellence Award for building a total Catholic education and formation program, including those with special needs, through imagination, collaboration and effective training.  The entire program is grounded in a principle the pastor, Fr. Reynolds, calls "leading forth" as opposed to "schooling."  Anne's gifts and talents reach beyond the parish.  Diocesan committees, bible study programs and the Annual Catechetical Congress are touched and influenced by her presence and leadership.

Dan Schwieterman, M.Div., M.Ed., Director of Religious Education
All Saints Catholic Church, Houston, TX

Dan Schwieterman, Director of Religious Education at All Saints Catholic Church in Houston was nominated for the Religious Educational Excellence Award by his parish for his tenacious approach to bringing the Gospel to the people.  Dan implements a unique program that allows families to connect with the church by having successfully established an after-school catechetical program in the public schools and by recruiting Catholic public school teachers to meet with the children after the regular school day is over, much like any other extracurricular offering.  Dan is most proud of introducing others to the process as a way to evangelize and meet the families where they are.

Joan Sundstrom, Coordinator of Religious Education
North American Martyrs Parish, Auburn, MA

Joan Sundstrom is Coordinator of Religious Education at North American Martyrs in Auburn, Massachusetts where she has implemented a creative and successful program of adolescent catechesis.  Using a curriculum developed by the Diocese of Worcester, Joan involves the students and parents at a level of intentional commitment to faith formation.  Both the parents and students must make a written declaration of why they choose to engage in this program and what they hope to gain from participation, coupled with shared conversation about their reasons for committing to the program.  Lead catechists, parents and adult facilitators participate with the students in the program thereby modeling the importance of faith formation as a lived experience at all stages of life.  Joan is consistently recognized for her enthusiasm, self-confidence and strong sense of faith.

Congratulations REEA Award winners!
