Bishops (USCCB) Congressional Advocacy Days
are intended to bring Catholic educators
and parents together in Washington, DC, to
increase the Catholic school's influence

to meet their representatives in Congress.

EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITY
A-SMYLE Program
A-SMYLE (the American Serbia & Montenegro
Youth Leadership Exchange Program) is
funded by the U.S. Department of State
and supported
by the Ministry of Education of Serbia and Montenegro. Ninety-five
high school students from Serbia and Montenegro will study in
the US during the 2006-07 school year.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Materials
Food Fast is a 24-hour hunger awareness retreat experience geared
toward youth in grades 8-12, designed to educate them about global
hunger and poverty issues. Operation Rice Bowl, CRS' official Lenten
program, calls on people to Pray, Fast, Learn and Give in solidarity
with the poor around the world. Click here for

Summer Study in Ireland
A course designed to study the Irish Education System, and concurrently
to study the history, literature, and culture of Ireland, is available
for US teachers at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
Along with meeting their Irish contemporaries, the participants
conduct their own research in areas which represent their professional
interests such as curriculum, assessment, special and vocational
education, and school administration.
The
summer 2006 program is scheduled from July
5 –July 29, 2006 and the enrollment
deadline is April 1, 2006. Six graduate credits
will be awarded for successful completion

The National Endowment for the Humanities
(NEH) maintains EDSITEment,

AND GRANTS
Future Filmakers Festival
This celebration of young film and video artists, where participants
share their work, attend workshops, and meet film professionals
and other young filmmakers, is calling for submissions from filmmakers
ages twenty or younger. The event runs June 16-18; the deadline

Inspired Teacher Scholarships
Inspiration Software is offering twenty-five scholarships of $750
each to encourage and facilitate teachers who employ visual-learning
techniques in the classroom. Five additional scholarships will
be given to teachers just beginning to use such strategies. Applications
must be sent by January 30. Click here for

A $100,000 Cash Award for teachers
The Kinder Excellence in Teaching Award, a $100,000 cash prize, will
be awarded to an extraordinary teacher in an under-served community.
The award seeks to recognize innovative and results-oriented teaching
and to raise public awareness of the importance of effective and
committed teachers.
Nancy
and Rich Kinder of Houston, TX established this
award so an outstanding educator serving low-income
children could be rewarded financially for his
or her work. To be selected, teachers must be
nominated for the Kinder Excellence in Teaching
Award. Nominees must be currently employed in
a K-12 school, public or private, in the U.S.
where at least 50 percent of students qualify
for the free- and reduced-price meal program.
Nominations should be submitted online at www.kinderaward.org.
Application deadline is extended to
February 1, 2006.
MathMovesU Grants and Scholarships
Program
Raytheon Company has launched the MathMovesU
Grants and Scholarships Program to reward
real-life "Math Heroes" for their
dedication to improving math education
and their inspiration of participation
in math. Maximum Award: $2,500. Eligibility: full-time teachers currently
employed and teaching a mathematics curriculum at a middle school
or high school in the U.S. Deadline: February 15, 2006.

Stimulating Interest in Careers
in Fisheries Science and Management
The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program is designed to stimulate
interest in careers in fisheries science and management among groups
underrepresented in the fisheries professions, including minorities
and women. Students (Grades 10-12) spend 8 weeks in the summer working
alongside their mentor who is a fisheries professional in their local
community. Participants also receive a $3,000 scholarship. Deadline:

Civic Connections Program
The National Council for the Social Studies
Civic Connections Program links local history
inquiry with community service-learning
activities. Teachers will develop and adapt
these activities based on their students'
interests and abilities, the needs or problems
in the local community, and their local
social studies curriculum requirements.

The Purpose Prize: $100,000 for
Innovators Over 60
Civic Ventures, a nonprofit organization
announces The Purpose Prize -- five $100,000
awards for Americans over 60 whose creativity,
talent
and experience is transforming the way our nation addresses critical
social problems, including education. The Purpose Prize is for those "with
the passion, smarts, and experience to discover new opportunities,
create new programs, or find inventive ways to make lasting social

Recognizing a Teacher Who Overcomes
Adversity
The Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation's Freida J. Riley
Teacher Award annually recognizes an American teacher who overcomes
adversity or makes an enormous sacrifice in order to positively impact
students. It is given in honor of teacher Freida J. Riley who died
of Hodgkin's disease at the age of 31. Maximum Award: $10,000. Deadline:
