from New Orleans to Atlanta. We look forward to four days in Georgia celebrating

Regional
Meetings
The
fall 2005 regional meetings will be underway
soon. You will want to attend the one near
you. These annual gatherings of Catholic high
school administrators and others in a geographic
area provide the opportunity for discussion
of matters pertinent to the region as well
as national issues of importance for American
Catholic high schools. Your regional representative,
who serves on the Secondary Schools Department
Executive Committee and elected by you, organizes
the meeting and Sr. Mary Frances Taymans, the
Executive Director, attends. As a membership
organization the regional meeting is also your
opportunity to provide important counsel to
the Department and Association.

Benefits - News You Can Use
This
time of year is membership renewal time for
NCEA members. Thanks to all of our members
for your continued support. One benefit of
continuing your membership is a subscription
to The Emmaus Journal, an electronic
newsletter for campus ministers, religion teachers
and service directors in the Catholic secondary
school. For the first time, the Journal will
be sent to all members three times during the
school year. Look for this year's first issue
at the end of the month and let us know what
you think. We welcome your feedback and input!
Publications
Being
Catholic: From the Heart, by Bishop
Gordon Bennett, SJ, is the Department's newest
publication. This short but inspiring book
is the text of Bishop Bennett's well-received
keynote address at the Tradition and
Transitions conference in June 2005
in which he reflected on Mission, Identity
and the Catholic School (20 pages, $6 members/$9

IN
MEMORIAM
Monika
Hellwig, Ph.D.
Dr.
Monika Hellwig died suddenly on Friday, September
30, 2005 in Washington, DC. Dr. Hellwig was
recently appointed a Senior Fellow at the Woodstock
Center at Georgetown University after serving
nine years as the president and executive director
of the Association of Catholic Colleges and
Universities (ACCU), a close partner with NCEA.
Prior to her leadership role with the ACCU,
Dr. Hellwig was the Landegger Distinguished
Professor of Theology at Georgetown University,
where she taught for three decades. She had
written and lectured extensively, nationally
and internationally, both in scholarly and
in popular contexts, in Catholic theology and
in inter-faith studies, and was a past president
of the Catholic Theological Society of America.
Her published books include: Understanding
Catholicism, Jesus the Compassion of God, The
Eucharist and the Hunger of the World, A Case
for Peace in Reason and Faith, and Guests of
God: Stewards of Creation. Please remember
her and her family in your prayers.
David
Coghlan, Ph.D.
Dr.
David Coghlan died unexpectedly on October
2, 2005. Dr. Coghlan was President of Paul
VI High School in Haddonfield, NJ. He was a
former Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese
of Camden and teacher at Gloucester Catholic
High School (Gloucester City, NJ). He was a
great friend to NCEA, and his daughter, Maureen,
worked in the NCEA Secondary Schools Department.
Please keep him and his family in your prayers
as well.

The

College
Board's $25,000 Inspiration Award
The
College Board seeks applications for its 2006
Inspiration Awards, which celebrate America’s
most improved high schools. Three winning schools
will receive $25,000 each, and five honorable
mention schools will receive $1,000 each. For
the first time, the College Board is opening
up the Inspiration Awards to nonpublic schools.

Grant
Writing Institute
The
Grant Institute: Certificate in Professional
Program Development and Grant Communication is
a five-day intensive and interactive experience
in which participants will be led through
program development, grant writing and funding
acquisition processes through the completion
of four courses. The Institute is at Saint
John University's Manhattan campus in New
York, November 14-18, 2005. Tuition is $997.00
