NCEA's Department of Secondary Schools Awards
The Secondary Schools Department honors Catholic school educators who deserve national recognition and reflect the richness and diversity of American Catholic education. You are encouraged to consider nominees who have made significant contributions in a variety of rolls including administrators, faculty, staff, board leadership and athletic and co-curricular advisors. The awards criteria are:
- Nominees should be persons who have made outstanding contributions to Catholic secondary education.
- Nominations will be open to the entire membership; the selection committee will determine the number of awards. (Generally, five or six awards are presented.)
- Recipients will be, or will have been, associated with NCEA through membership and/or service.
- Recipients must be willing and able to be present at the convention to receive an award.
- Recipients must have demonstrable achievements in Catholic secondary education at the local, diocesan, state, or national level.
- The person nominating a candidate must be able to substantiate the nominee's contributions and services to Catholic secondary education.

The Michael J. Guerra Leadership Award
Instituted by the Secondary Schools Department’s Executive Committee of the National Catholic Educational Association, the award honors Michael Guerra, the NCEA Secondary Schools Department’s Executive Director from 1982 to 2001. This national award, launched at the NCEA convention in 2001, recognizes Michael Guerra’s vision, his leadership and his extraordinary commitment to the mission of Catholic secondary school education. The Award serves to advance this vision as it acclaims the significant contributions of a selected educator.
The MJG Leadership Award is bestowed annually at the NCEA convention to an educator whose impact on Catholic Secondary Schools will have a distinctive and lasting impact.
Nominees are selected according to the following criteria:
- Outstanding service to Catholic secondary school(s);
- Local and/or national contribution having a long-term impact;
- Capacity to serve as an articulate spokesperson for/on behalf of Catholic Secondary Schools.
Selection of the recipent is made by the Executive Committee of the Department of Secondary Schools.
