CONVENTION NEWS

The NCEA National Convention in Atlanta, GA, will be held April 18-21, 2006.  We look forward to having "a peach of a time" celebrating Catholic education with our colleagues from across the country. For information on programming, click here.

Annual Business Meeting and Luncheon
All delegates to the convention from NCEA member Secondary Schools are invited to attend.  You will have the opportunity to learn about the work of the Department and meet educators from your region and across the country while enjoying a complimentary lunch.  Because seating is limited RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.  If you have not already done so, please reserve seats today for you and those attending from your school by clicking here by April 12. FRONTIERS OF JUSTICE

Congratulations to this year's Frontiers of Justice (FOJ) participants.  FOJ is a partnership between NCEA and Catholic Relief Services to promote global solidarity.  Participants will travel to Kosovo June 29-July 13 to meet students and educators there with whom they will partner during the 2006-07 school year.  U.S. participants are Janet Davis, Immaculate High School, Danbury, CT, Lynette Grypp, Holy Names Academy, Seattle, WA, Kristi Maguire, Nazareth Academy High School, Philadelphia, PA, John McConnell, DeMatha Catholic High School, Hyattsville, MD, Greg Milo, Archbishop Hoban High School, Akron, OH and Richard Stoops, Immaculate High School, Danbury, CT.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES 

FREE SAT/ACT PREPARATION
eKnowledge, LLC announced that a group of NFL, AFL, CFL and NFL Europe players represented by Victory Sports Group (VSG) has donated its $199 SAT & ACT test prep program to every Catholic high school student who wants one. Click here for more information about these interactive CD-ROM and DVD programs and information on how to order.

Because of the rise of eBay and other re-selling venues, eKnowledge & VSG do not allow bulk shipments of these programs to schools or areas. They ask that any parent or individual student that desires the program, simply to request it online or by phone. They need only pay S&H ($9.95). This link takes users directly to the Web page with the donation code already encoded.

Please distribute this information to your students and parents as you see fit. Also please encourage anyone ordering the program to leave a comment with eKnowledge thanking the football players for their generosity.

ATTENTION ITALIAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS
The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) is now accepting applications for its Students to Leaders (S2L) Program, an educational workshop that exposes Italian American high school juniors and seniors to the inner workings of government and public policy in the nation's capital. The program, in its fifth year, is sponsored by the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF).  The NIAF all-expenses-paid mentoring workshops will help participants develop effective leadership skills and inform them about possible career choices.  To apply and for more information, go to http://www.niaf.org/s2l/2006/index.asp.  Application deadline is April 28, 2006.

PRESIDENTIAL FREEDOM SCHOLARSHIPS
The Presidential Freedom Scholarships are currently available for the 2006 program year. This program, administered by Learn and Serve America at the Corporation for National and Community Service, provides Presidential recognition and a $1,000 college scholarship to high school juniors and seniors for their leadership in community service. The Corporation provides $500 that must be matched with at least $500 secured by the high school from the community. Students must complete at least 100 hours of community service to be eligible for the scholarship.  This year the Corporation is offering up to 6,500 scholarships. The postmark deadline to submit certification forms is May 12, 2006.

GRANTS TO HELP EASE THE TRANSITION OF STUDENTS SWITCHING SCHOOLS & RELOCATING
The Parent Relocation Council is granting scholarship awards for high school seniors who have demonstrated an ability to overcome difficulties during their family’s relocation. Awards are based on an essay of up to 500 words and may be used to fund tuition, books, school fees and room and board. Maximum Award: $2000. Eligibility: High school seniors graduating from school this academic year, proceeding to a two- or four-year college, and who have relocated in the past five years.Deadline: May 15, 2006.  http://www.parentrelocationcouncil.com/scholarship/application.php

COLLEGE PREP PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS
Questbridge, a non-profit organization dedicated to giving high-achieving, low-income students resources during the college application process, is accepting applications for its College Prep Program for High School Juniors. Maximum Award: full scholarship to summer program, coverage of expenses for college travel visits, SAT prep course and material, and a new laptop computer. 2006 BUTLER-COOLEY EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARDS
The Turnaround Management Association is now accepting nominations for the 2006 Butler-Cooley Excellence in Teaching Awards. The award honors teachers who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and skill in shaping the lives of children and teens through education. Maximum Award: $5,000 cash and travel and lodging expenses to the TMA Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida, October 11-14, 2006. Eligibility: primary or secondary school teachers employed by accredited schools for at least five years.Deadline: May 1, 2006. http://www.turnaround.org/about/awards.asp

FULBRIGHT AWARDS AROUND THE GLOBE
The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering American education professionals lecture and research awards throughout the world during the 2007-2008 academic year. The application deadline is August 1. For more information, visit www.cies.org.
