Transportation in Minneapolis
Airport:
Less than a three-hour flight from most U.S. cities and just minutes from downtown with access to light-rail transit, the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) is served by 10 domestic airlines, three international carriers, three regional carriers and four charter carriers making it one of the 10 busiest airports in the country. Home to Northwest Airlines, MSP connects Minneapolis to nearly 800 cities in 120 countries. In addition, major freeways in all directions plus ample bus and train service make navigating your way around a snap!
Getting Downtown:
The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is just 15 minutes by taxi from downtown Minneapolis and 30 minutes by light rail.
Public Transportation:
Catch the Hiawatha Line light rail train or a city bus from MSP Airport - costing between $1.25 and $2.75 (depending on the route and time of day) one way. The train runs between both MSP terminals and continues right into downtown in less than 30 minutes.
To ride the train: take the escalator down one level from the Tram Level to purchase a ticket from the vending machines. Take the escalator down another level to board. Bus service is also available, up a level from Tram Level.
Metro Transit day passes are available for purchase at the Visitor Information Center at the Minneapolis Convention Center during regular hours. The passes can be used on buses and light rail transit.
SuperShuttle:
If you do not mind sharing a ride into downtown, SuperShuttle is an easy, low-cost option that circulates between MSP and downtown hotels for about $15.00 per person (one way). Ticket counters are located in MSP’s Ground Transportation Atrium, accessible via the Tram Level.
Taxi Service:
Taxis are available at both MSP terminals. At the Lindbergh Terminal, taxi service is available from the Tram Level. At the Humphrey Terminal, taxis wait at the Humphrey Ground Transportation Center, in the Humphrey Parking ramp on Level 1. Cab fare from MSP to downtown starts at about $25.00 (one way).
Getting Around in Downtown Minneapolis
Try the Skyway:
Downtown Minneapolis has a unique skyway system, located one floor above ground, offering enclosed travel between buildings. More than seven miles of glass-enclosed walkways connect hotels, shopping centers, sports and entertainment venues, restaurants and parking ramps – which means pedestrians can travel in climate-controlled bliss.
Parking:
There are more than 65,000 parking spaces in downtown Minneapolis. Street parking requires change for meters, which have varying rates, limits and time restrictions. Ramps and lots, which run $7.00 to $20.00 a day, provide convenient parking space on busy weekdays and weekends evenings. Mall of America offers free ample parking as well.
