For the past 20 years, the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) has recognized exceptional individuals for their support of education and youth in the United States, and of Catholic education in particular. NCEA's St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award and the NCEA President's Award were created to honor those individuals whose personal or professional philanthropy or volunteer service has impacted U.S. education and our country's youth in general or Catholic education in particular.
The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award, given in recognition of significant contributions to Catholic education, is named in honor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774-1821), the first native-born American saint. The award is a bronze-colored medallion with the image of Mother Seton in profile, circled by the words "NCEA Elizabeth Ann Seton Award." It is placed on a wide red ribbon and worn around the neck. As part of the awards program, NCEA presents $1,000 scholarships in the awardees names to deserving Catholic school students from the community.

Awardees are selected by a committee chaired by NCEA's president. The committee uses the following guidelines in the selection process:
- As a national Catholic educational honor, award nominees' contribution(s) to education and/or to youth should be deemed as major and far reaching.
- The NCEA St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award is open to an individual of any race, creed or religious persuasion.
- Past awardees, current NCEA employees, and members of the NCEA Board of Directors are not eligible
- Awardees are required to attend the Seton Gala Awards held the first Monday in October in Washington, D.C., and are asked to accept this honor in person.
