All of us who watched the news and read the papers with increasing anxiety and sadness felt that we wanted to help. The scenes of the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita leading our evening news programs each night horrified us all. NCEA contacted diocesan and school leaders both in the storm region and elsewhere across the country where all had the same pressing question: How can we help?
Through this effort, a $1.00 contribution was requested from each of our students in Catholic schools and religious education programs to be earmarked for the educational needs of their counterparts impacted by the hurricanes. And so the Child to Child Campaign to Aid Catholic Education was born. By December of 2005, over one million dollars had been raised through the country. By December 8, 2005, Distribution of those funds began in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Go here for a listing of those donating to the campaign. You may also see photographic coverage of the initial funding disbursements here.
Although the campaign officially ended October 31, 2005, all donations received after that date were distributed to the dioceses with the greatest needs.
