Arlington, Va. ̶ As Catholic schools across the country begin to open their doors for the 2013-14 school year, students and faculty will be welcomed with posters and banners announcing the new theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2014 and for several years to come: “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”
In response to member requests for a theme and logo that would last more than a year, the committee for the National Marketing Campaign For Catholic Schools recommended that the new theme be used for at least three to five years. This will provide opportunities for schools to brand the week and their ongoing marketing activities with repeated mentions and use of a consistent logo.
The annual Catholic Schools Week celebration is a joint project of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). In 2014 it will be observed Jan. 26 – Feb. 1.
According to NCEA President Brother Robert Bimonte, “The heart of a Catholic education is a strong Catholic school community and the foundation of this community is our faith. For those involved in this ministry, the upcoming academic year – and every year for Catholic educators – is a ‘year of faith.' A vibrant academic program and a commitment to service also are hallmarks of a Catholic education.”
Dominican Sister John Mary Fleming, executive director of the Secretariat of Catholic Education for USCCB, endorsed the concept of keeping the same theme for several years. “This will provide schools the opportunity to create long-term Catholic identity projects in their communities,” she said. “It’s also especially appropriate that this new brand will mark National Catholic Schools Week 2014 – the 40th anniversary of this annual event.”
The new logo features a swirl of colors interacting around a cross, which is at the center of all Catholic education. “The vibrancy of the colors and the movement and shadows in the logo portray the inner-connectivity and community life that are present in any Catholic school,” said logo designer Beatriz Ruiz, who is NCEA's manager of graphic design and production.
The traditional Catholic Schools Week marketing kit, with ideas for celebrating, examples of successful programs from prior years, ready-to-use letter templates and the liturgy guide, will continue to be available to members beginning in the fall.
NCEA, founded in 1904, is a professional membership organization that provides leadership, direction and service to fulfill the evangelizing, catechizing and teaching mission of the church. NCEA's members include elementary schools, high schools, boards and councils, parish religious education programs and seminaries. USCCB is the national public policy organization of the bishops in the United States.
