Sustaining Outstanding Schools: SOS               

Over the past year, the focus of this column has been on the work of Art Costa and Habits of the Mind. The first column introduced a framework for understanding and using the Habits of Mind approach. the remaining columns present a focused look at three specific Habits of Mind and how to implement them within the classroom.

 

Dr. Michael Boyle ushers in the third article in the SOS series, exploring Habits of Mind in encouraging 21st century students to respond with wonderment and awe, including steps for implementing such a mindset.

Philip Robey analyzes Lent and the secondary school, believing that it's important for students to understand the seasons of the church and to participate in them in whatever ways are possible; the season in incredibly full and rich, and it might be the only contact with Catholicism that some students will ever have.

Daniel Curtin discusses the need of Catholic school superintendency to plan for the future, especially in the area of spiritual formation. He says that, for diocesan leaders educated in publc universities, the need for spiritual formation is critical for their success as leaders of Catholic schools.

Department of Boards and Councils           

Regina Haney addresses the recent issue of whether emailing replaces in-person board meetings. She argues that face-to-face interaction enjoys the added components of observation and body language, which are wholelly necessary to effective communication, especially in team scenarios.

The role of the board in development and advancement

In the last issue of NCEA Notes (November 2010) this column reviewed the first four guidelines on the board's role in advancing the mission of the school. As the discussion of the board's role in Catholic school development continues, four more areas to consider are presented.

General News                                                     

 In an Update on Public Policy, Sr. Dale McDonald, PBVM, Ph.D., provides new guidelines for school nutrition programs, with the understanding that, since many children consume as many as half their daily calories at school, strengthening nutritional standards is an important step.

 In Legal Issues, Sr. Mary Angela Shaughnessy, SCN, J.D., Ph.D., brings to attention several issues of overnight trips, which, if not addressed appropriately, can result in danger and liability, including: (1) Age and behavior of chaperones, (2) sleeping arrangements and (3) students with life-threatening allergies.
