Religious Education Assessments (ACRE for Institutions and IFG for Individuals)
NCEA began offering religious education assessments for students in the late 1970’s. Used by Catholic schools and parish-based religious education programs, NCEA ACRE is an integrated approach to assessment offering both faith knowledge (cognitive domain) as well as beliefs, behaviors, attitudes, and practices (affective domain) sections. IFG is an assessment survey of religious knowledge and spirituality for adults. It supports the importance and ongoing nature of adult faith formation for Catholic school, faculty and staff, parish catechists, RCIA catechists, youth ministers, parents, seminarians, novices, and the Catholic adult population at large.

Webinars - Board Leadership Training Courses Online
A series of "Webinars" on various topics will empower leaders of Catholic education boards/councils/commissions with the tools and information they need to become more successful, mission-oriented leaders. Board chairpersons, officers, committee chairs, administrators, superintendents, pastors, and others who work with boards will benefit. Each webinar course lasts 3 weeks. Work online any time you want during the course. All readings and materials are provided online. Submit assignments, participate in class discussion message boards, and interact with course moderators - all online.
Credit: The University of Dayton offers 1.5 Continuing Education Units per course at no additional cost.

Selected Programs for Improving Catholic Education (SPICE)
SPICE is a Catholic national diffusion network - a project that identifies, validates, and disseminates creative, cutting-edge programs that work so that other schools or dioceses may adapt or replicate them. A new topic is chosen each year. Programs apply to be selected as a model program and are screened. All interested educators are then invited to a "Conversations in Excellence" symposium at Boston College in June where the selected programs are showcased and keynotes are presented by leaders in the field. The keynote addresses and program descriptions are then published in a book that becomes part of the "Conversations in Excellence" series. Descriptions of the selected programs are disseminated and remain available on the NCEA Web site and publications. The programs' leaders agree to provide more information if anyone contacts them with a serious inquiry. (SPICE is cosponsored by NCEA and Boston College.)
Go to the SPICE page for more information, applications, and registration form for the symposium at Boston College.

Catholic School Leadership Institute

Principals and assistant principals are often asked to begin their ministry of administration with little background and are often overwhelmed by the diversity of requirements needed for the position.

In order to meet the needs of beginning principals and to support and encourage experienced principals, the NCEA has developed a summer workshop which will provide ongoing formation and support and at the same time reinvigorate those who already face the daily challenges of administration. Those teachers who are considering the ministry of administration will find the program a valuable opportunity to share their ideas and learn from experienced administrators.
The goals of the Institute are to:
  • Encourage and support experienced principals
  • Provide assistance to new principals to learn various aspects of their ministry
  • Help assistant principals and competent teachers discern their own future in the ministry of administration
  • Network with principals and candidates from other parts of the country.
The Catholic School Leadership Institute is a 3 day workshop covering various aspects of administration.

Special Needs in Catholic Schools Conference

The setting for this year’s conference is sunny San Diego and our hotel is on the bay. This will be a wonderful learning opportunity - as well as a chance to escape winter for a few days!

NCEA Catechetical Scholars Program:
Since 1995, the Department of Religious Education has offered forty-eight veteran diocesan and parish catechetical leaders a place in the Catechetical Scholars Program. Field practitioners are given time away from full-time jobs in ministry to research a topic of concern that furthers catechetical ministry. Selection is based on the following criteria: at least five years experience as a diocesan or parish catechetical leader, submission of a written proposal for a research project, commitment to a two-year process, and a letter of recommendation from their Bishop or Pastor. Contact the Department of Religious Education (reled@ncea.org
) if you are interested in the next gathering of Catechetical Scholars.

Shepherding the Shepherds (Religious Education)
Shepherding the Shepherds is a two-day retreat for catechetical leaders, which encourages prayerful reflection, journal writing, and sharing with peers in ministry. The program seeks to deepen personal commitment to spiritual growth, clarify the faith dimensions of daily work in Church ministry and strengthen bonds between colleagues. Contact the Department of Religious Education (reled@ncea.org) if you are interested in a Shepherding the Shepherds Retreat.
