Religious Education Assessments (ACRE for Institutions and IFG for Individuals)
NCEA began offering religious education assessments for students in the late 1970’s. Used by Catholic schools and parish-based religious education programs, NCEA ACRE is an integrated approach to assessment offering both faith knowledge (cognitive domain) as well as beliefs, behaviors, attitudes, and practices (affective domain) sections. IFG is an assessment survey of religious knowledge and spirituality for adults. It supports the importance and ongoing nature of adult faith formation for Catholic school, faculty and staff, parish catechists, RCIA catechists, youth ministers, parents, seminarians, novices, and the Catholic adult population at large.

Webinars - Board Leadership Training Courses Online
A series of "Webinars" on various topics will empower leaders of Catholic education boards/councils/commissions with the tools and information they need to become more successful, mission-oriented leaders. Board chairpersons, officers, committee chairs, administrators, superintendents, pastors, and others who work with boards will benefit. Each webinar course lasts 3 weeks. Work online any time you want during the course. All readings and materials are provided online. Submit assignments, participate in class discussion message boards, and interact with course moderators - all online.

Selected Programs for Improving Catholic Education (SPICE)
SPICE is a Catholic national diffusion network - a project that identifies, validates, and disseminates creative, cutting-edge programs that work so that other schools or dioceses may adapt or replicate them. A new topic is chosen each year. Programs apply to be selected as a model program and are screened. All interested educators are then invited to a "Conversations in Excellence" symposium at Boston College in June where the selected programs are showcased and keynotes are presented by leaders in the field. The keynote addresses and program descriptions are then published in a book that becomes part of the "Conversations in Excellence" series. Descriptions of the selected programs are disseminated and remain available on the NCEA Web site and publications. The programs' leaders agree to provide more information if anyone contacts them with a serious inquiry. (SPICE is cosponsored by NCEA and Boston College.)
Go to the SPICE page for more information, applications, and registration form for the symposium at Boston College.

Catholic School Leadership Institute - 2010
July 12- 15-2010
Baltimore, MD

Principals and assistant principals are often asked to begin their ministry of administration with little background and are often overwhelmed by the diversity of requirements needed for the position.

In order to meet the needs of beginning principals and to support and encourage experienced principals, the NCEA has developed a summer workshop which will provide ongoing formation and support and at the same time reinvigorate those who already face the daily challenges of administration. Those teachers who are considering the ministry of administration will find the program a valuable opportunity to share their ideas and learn from experienced administrators.
The goals of the Institute are to:
  • Encourage and support experienced principals
  • Provide assistance to new principals to learn various aspects of their ministry
  • Help assistant principals and competent teachers discern their own future in the ministry of administration
  • Network with principals and candidates from other parts of the country.
The Catholic School Leadership Institute is a 3 day workshop covering various aspects of administration.

Shepherding the Shepherds
A retreat program designed to integrate the school administrators’ spirituality fully with their ministry. The program fosters this integration through a series of exchanges with peers in other Catholic elementary and/or secondary schools. They together explore the faith-building dimensions of Catholic school leadership in context of the privilege and challenge of leadership. Taking the 2 days for reflection, relaxation, conversation and prayer, they gain new insights and renewed energy for their leadership role. [More Information].

Individuals and schools interested in this program might consider purchasing Colleagues in Faith: Models of Shared Prayer and Collegial Support for Catholic Educational Leaders.  This book is the result of the Shepherding the Shepherds program and provides guided sessions on convening groups around a theme or season to pray, share, celebrate, relax and show their support for one another.  Colleagues in Faith reflects a highly collaborative effort of writing, reviewing and piloting by those who know best: Catholic school educators.  Purchasing information may be attained through the NCEA Publications Department at 202.337.6232.
