Strategic Planning Services with the Board as the Lead Agent
Offered by the NCEA Department of Boards and Councils
- Are you uncertain where your school will be a few years from now?
- Will the resources you need be there?
- Will the students be there?
- Will the curriculum and services keep up with the children’s needs?
- Are you vulnerable to a lawsuit/financial downturn/roof leak/disaster/crisis that could jeopardize your existence?
- Does your wish list always remain a fantasy?
The solution is strategic planning. Strategic planning begins with strategic thinking. It is a continuous, systematic thought process that identifies a desired future and ways to bring it about by linking strategic plans with medium-range programs and short-range operating and budgeting plans.
Planning is getting people involved in collecting good information and then using that information to make intelligent decisions about the future.
Boards department staff can work with your school board/council and administration to develop a comprehensive 5-year strategic plan. The plan will include a statement of vision, goals, and specific objectives/strategies. The strategies will detail projected targets, outcomes, timeline, and the identification of lead agents and resources needed.
The process includes the establishment and orientation of a Planning Committee, interviews by department staff of major players, and Stakeholders Retreats. The staff guides subcommittees through work on the critical issues and multiple reviews of how well the proposals will affect the major concerns and issues facing the school.
The Strategic Plan then becomes the school’s operating plan, with quarterly monitoring by the board and administration. Built-in flexibility allows for periodic fine-tuning without veering off course. No longer will your school be driven by circumstances, drifting into the unknown year by year. By charting your own course and the way to get there, the school will determine its own future.
Can your school afford a Strategic Plan?
The real question is:
Can your school afford NOT to have a Strategic Plan?
In these unsettled times, only schools that take control of their own future will arrive at where they want to be five years from now.
