A SPICE 2003 Program
The Catholic Education Foundation
Archdiocese of Los Angeles, California
Mission Statement
To support and enhance excellence in Catholic schools and to make schools within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as affordable as possible. The Foundation will seek creative ways to ensure that the poor and disadvantaged are served by our schools.
Who We Are
Founded in 1988 by Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, the Foundation serves the schools and 100,000 students in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. With an endowment of $79 million, the Foundation supports programs to advance Catholic education in Los Angeles. They include the Tuition Awards Program, the Tuition S.O.S. Program, the Advantage Plus Program, and the Principal Development Program. The annual fundraising goal is $2 million, which extends support for students not funded by the endowment. The annual program budget is $6.5 million.
The Tuition Awards Program
The Tuition Awards Program is the heart of the Catholic Education Foundation. Students apply for scholarships through the principals at their Catholic elementary or high school and, if selected, receive $800 for elementary and $1,500 for high school tuition. This scholarship covers less than 40% of actual tuition costs. Students of any religion are eligible to receive a Tuition Award. The Catholic Education Foundation made 5,500 awards at archdiocesan schools in 2003.
Who We Serve
Families qualify for assistance based on annual income. In 2001-02, 115% of the Federal Reduced Lunch Program guidelines is the threshold. Other criteria include the family's involvement in the school and the principal's recommendation. Regional committees consisting of staff, school leaders, donors, and community volunteers review applications.
