San Xavier Mission School Expansion Program

The Expansion Program at San Xavier Mission School assisted the school in continuing its mission to educate, nurture, and empower increasing numbers of Tohono O'odham and other Native American children. The expansion allowed the school to increase enrollment and address the needs of the Tohono O'odham children living within the 108 square mile area of the school. It is the only school in the district and the only Catholic school that exists on the reservation. As a result of the efforts of the whole community, pastor, principal, faculty, staff, parents, students, and numerous volunteers and benefactors, the school is in the final phase of completing the expansion program.
The intended outcome of this Expansion Program is to break the cycle of poverty that has existed for many of the Native American children living on the Tohono O'odham reservation. By providing a strong academic foundation, by fostering self-esteem, and by enhancing their cultural way of life, the school has made a dramatic impact on the lives of these children and their families.
The program's goal was to be reached by responding to needs in several major areas. School security and safety, reducing overcrowding in classrooms, renovation of the playground, elimination of drainage problems, providing a technology lab along with a science/art lab, and building a large courtyard for community and student body activities have all been addressed in the last three years of the expansion.
The financial support for this project was solicited through many fundraisers, foundations, and generous benefactors. The school children sold candy bars and the parents held dinners. Angel Charity, a local foundation, and a teacher from the school gave substantial donations. Even the "Cookie Riders," the Golden Wings Harley Motorcycle group, gave financial assistance. It would be difficult to mention all the sources of financial support in this summary. It was through the school community's dedication and hard work and the financial resources from so many different groups and individuals that San Xavier Mission School was able to reach the goals it set out to complete in just three years.
