A SPICE 2004 Program
Developmentally Appropriate Assessment and Documentation for Preschools
St. Luke Preschool
Barrington, Rhode Island
St. Luke Preschool opened in 1994 as part of St. Luke School, in the Diocese of Providence. Located in residential Barrington, Rhode Island for over thirty years, St. Luke’s also serves students from several, varied surrounding communities. The enrollment stands at 248 students in kindergarten through eighth grade and 47 students in preschool. St. Luke School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
The preschool is housed in its own spacious building, providing a safe and nurturing environment where children can explore the wonders of the world around them and their connection to it. The children are encouraged to develop spiritually, socially and cognitively by providing engaging, hands-on activities. An integrated curriculum is based on research and grounded in Christian values. The school offers a three-day morning class and afternoon class for four year olds and a two-day morning class for three year olds. Each class has sixteen children and two teachers. There is also an after preschool Packer Snacker program.
In keeping with its mission to recognize the unique God-given gifts of each child, St. Luke Preschool uses a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate assessment and documentation program. Checklists, anecdotal records, parent information sheets and conferences, report cards, portfolios and Writing Center folders, learning webs, video tape, and photos are all methods of collecting information to help present a total picture of each child's learning. Teacher self-assessment helps to improve teaching strategies. Parents and administrators want documentation of learning to provide accountability for preschool programs and teacher effectiveness. Assessment has become a vital educational practice, continuing to strengthen the entire St. Luke Preschool program.
