Mount Sacred Heart Montessori Program
Mount Sacred Heart School, Inc.
San Antonio, Texas
The Mount Sacred Heart (MSH) Montessori Program geared for the young child (ages 2 1/2 to 5) provides an effective Catholic foundation for academic and spiritual education. Established in 1973, the Montessori is an integral component of the MSH traditional school and fully accredited by the TCCED. Together, both divisions create a cohesive unit to form the best spiritual, educational and social environment for each child.
What sets the MSH Montessori apart from other primary programs is the manner in which it employs the instructional methods created by Dr. Maria Montessori with Catholic teachings. Her beliefs of learning are based upon 4 concepts: The Absorbent Mind, The Sensitive Periods, The Prepared Environment, and The Community. In the Montessori "prepared" environment children learn through their senses and work with concrete materials to understand abstractions. Montessori is a system of education based on each child's developmental needs for freedom within limits in a carefully prepared environment.
A unique facet of MSH Montessori is the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a specialized program where spiritual/biblical themes are presented that foster comprehension and engagement. In an "atrium" setting children are introduced to the "living catechesis," a hands-on approach to understanding Christian values.
Upon completing the Montessori Program, students are encouraged to continue their elementary development at MSH. This allows the child to reach the pinnacle of academic success, while preserving the spiritual and social integrity that s/he has already come to know within the MSH community.
