A SPICE 2005 Program

Benilde Program
St. John’s College High School

Washington, DC

Purpose - to allow students with diverse learning needs to successfully complete college preparatory coursework.

Population - students with a diagnosis of a learning disability and/or AD/HD. 20% have co-morbid conditions.

Design - Benilde students:

  1. Take one regular academic course in the summer. They may delay the study of a language until tenth grade.
  2. Have a non-credit Benilde class, ranging from 5-8 students, everyday.
  3. Are in the regular classroom for all subjects. They may qualify for honors or AP coursework. Accommodations, and support to the classroom teacher, are provided.
  4. Have the director of the program as guidance counselor.

Unique features

  1. Social Justice - Students discuss the implications of being an educational minority.
  2. Intact Curriculum - There are no changes made to the curriculum or homework. Changes to the assessment process usually limited to extra time.

Outcomes

  1. 35-40% of Benilde students make the honor roll each quarter.
  2. 10-20% take honors or AP classes.
  3. 95 students enrolled in the program, with another 10-15 who are at St. John’s but have finished Benilde. Typical number asked to leave due to poor academic performance = one per year.
  4. 97% go on to college, 95% to four-year institutions.
