Multiplying the Teacher: Academic Intervention Services Program
St. Andrew School

Rochester, New York

St. Andrew School is a small parochial school with a student population of about 130 students, pre-K-6th grade. Our school services a diverse urban population. To combat the issues of low student achievement, we have implemented an Academic Intervention Services Program (AIS). AIS utilizes classroom teachers, an AIS Coordinator, paraprofessionals and several volunteer tutors to address students' needs. READ 180, a remedial literacy based program from Scholastic has aided in achieving the AIS goals for intermediate students, primarily in the 4th grade.

READ 180 has been used for two yeas as an integral part of students' AIS plans. It focuses on English Language Arts skills. There are also many skill-based objectives that students concentrate on which are cross-curricular and will help students achieve success in other subject areas.

The program has proven to be successful in giving students an opportunity to make decisions and work independently while giving the facilitators a structured environment in which to teach.  Students enjoy new learning techniques and many learning styles are addressed. READ 180 can be easily tailored to meet many different school and classroom compositions. The flexibility the program allows is a large component of its success.
