The following successful programs were showcased at the annual SPICE Conversations in Excellence symposium that was held at Boston College in the summer of 1996. The mission of this elementary school, located in a middle-class suburb, is closely identified with the religious order that staffs it, the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The program provides examples of various ways the mission statement is lived out through in-service projects involving students and volunteer parents. Service activities and their values are also integrated into the curriculum.

Elizabeth Swift
 
This is an all-girl secondary school conducted by the sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. The new teacher mentoring program integrates new teachers into the mission and life of the school. It orients newcomers to the culture, mission and charisma of the school and the order. The program has three components: pre-service before school begins, frequent leadership instructional in-service during the school year, and a mentor-teacher assignment.

Matignon is a coeducational high school owned and operated by the Archdiocese of Boston. This program implements the mission goal of creating an environment in which Christian moral and social values provide the basis for the development of student identity, self-worth and awareness of others. Through an organized program of activities, forums and opportunities for service, students and parents have become more actively involved in extracurricular activities, have developed greater leadership and social skills, and have fostered collaboration among different groups within the school.

This is a secondary girls’ school conducted by the Ursuline Sisters. The peer counseling/peer mediation program involves students in a program which addresses issues of societal concern to adolescents and devises ways to help them meet their own needs and those of their peers. In keeping with the philosophy of the school, it aims to develop in students “wisdom and discipline to make responsible choices.”

This is a K-8 elementary school that is part of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. The program highlights three interlocking dimensions of message, community and service found in “To Teach as Jesus Did” and demonstrates how the St. Lawrence technology program embraces those dimensions. Through the in-servicing of teachers in technology, the mission of the schools is integrated with the most modern means of teaching students.

St. Jude is a K-8 elementary school that is part of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. A diverse mix of “Enrichment Programs” collectively encompass the goals of the mission of the school and enhance the curriculum. The program involves all components of the school community in accepting their responsibility to promote and accelerate the mission.

This is a K-8 elementary school within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. A middle school concept is designed to integrate the mission in unique ways to assist pre-adolescents and adolescents to practice Catholic values, achieve academic success and learn social responsibility. In addition to preparing students for the challenging curriculum of high school, the program provides a practical exploratory arts curriculum focused to meet the academic, social and physical challenges the students are facing.
