The BISON Fund (Buffalo Inner-City Scholarship Opportunity)

This program gives parents in the inner city of Buffalo the opportunity to attend a K to 8 parochial or private school of their choosing by providing scholarships, on the basis of need, that cover 50% of tuition costs.

Based on the principle of fixed costs, this school enhanced enrollment through a sliding scale of tuition and use of state funding. The model has been replicated throughout the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

In face of declining enrollments and increased payroll demands, this school leased space to a pre-school operation staffed in large part by students. The school diversified to produce non-tuition revenues while managing at the same time to enrich its own programmatic offerings.

The programs are: a tuition plan with service options; a scrip program for group purchasing; a successful annual giving campaign with a goal of $100,000; PTO fundraising activities for extracurriculars, an endowment program and a grants program.
