Perhaps the most beloved saint on the Catholic calendar, St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) is the patron of animals and ecology. On his feast day (October 4), many people have their animals (pet, farm, or exotic) blessed. Along with St. Dominic (1170-1221), St. Francis was founder of a new kind of religious order: the mendicants: those who begged or relied on donations in order to survive. They did not own property, individually or collectively and took a vow of poverty. Their reason for being was solely to preach the Gospel. As St. Francis said: ”Grant me the treasure of sublime poverty: permit the distinctive sign of our order to be that it does not possess anything of its own beneath the sun, for the glory of your name, and that it have no other patrimony than begging.” St. Francis is also responsible for our Christmas Nativity scenes (crèches) by presenting a living manger at Greccio at the Midnight Mass. |
