Diocesan Catholic Education and Catechetical Leaders Convene in Columbus, Ohio, in October

For CACE Annual Meeting

Tuesday, August 13, 2013
Arlington, Va.--More than 300 attendees are expected to attend the annual meeting of the Chief Administrators of Catholic Education (CACE) scheduled for Oct. 27-30, 2013, at the Hilton Columbus Downtown Hotel, Columbus, Ohio.

The meeting is the annual gathering of Catholic diocesan school superintendents, and other leaders of Catholic education. CACE is a department of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA).

The opening Mass for the meeting will be held Sunday, Oct. 27 at St. Joseph Cathedral in downtown Columbus. Most Rev. Frederick F. Campbell, bishop of Columbus, will preside.

On Monday, Most Rev. Blase Cupich, bishop of Spokane and chairman of the NCEA board of directors, will deliver a keynote address on the pastoral, ecclesial and effective aspects of diocesan leadership. On Wednesday, three leaders from St Rose of Lima parish in Newtown, Conn., will discuss the day that changed their community. Pastor Msgr. Robert Weiss, School Principal Mary Maloney and Director of Religions Education Pam Arsenalt will discuss the initial alert and the events following the tragedy.

Nearly 20 workshop sessions will address issues such as financial practice, school technology, Common Core State Standards, cooperation with higher education, enrollment management and evangelizing.

The Listening Lounge, an innovation during last year’s CACE meeting in San Diego, Calif., will return to give participants opportunities to share ideas and discuss topics of mutual interest. New this year, “Approchez” sessions will provide opportunities to share thoughts on vital issues. In each session, three diocesan leaders will present their approaches and attendees will be invited to comment or ask questions.

Jesuit Father John Belmonte, CACE vice president and superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Joliet, will celebrate the closing liturgy on Wednesday.

The eighth annual Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent Academy will meet at the same location for two days prior to the CACE meeting. The academy offers professional development opportunities for new, nearly new or aspiring school superintendents and assistant superintendents. Discussion topics include the superintendent as spiritual leader, academic leader and charismatic leader.

Established in 1904, the NCEA is the largest private professional education organization in the world, representing 150,000 Catholic educators serving 2 million students in schools from pre-K through high school as well as in parishes, seminaries and boards.
