Life Lessons Learned: Racism, Law and Justice

The history of slavery and racism is this country is a sordid one. Most history books report that the first slaves arrived in America in August 1619, on a ship named the White Lion. There is, however, compelling evidence that Christopher Columbus brought Africans as slaves to America in the 1490s, which means that racism has been around since white people first set foot on what is now the United States of America. How much of this is taught in our history classes today while we are talking about the birth of our country? Why do we honor Columbus if he was a conveyor of slaves? Why do we have a federal holiday in his honor? These are questions that can provide the basis for deep and spirited discussion among students.
