Forty Catholic Schools Honored as 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools

Out of 50 nationally recognized private schools, 40 Catholic schools stand out in 18 states and 23 arch/dioceses.

Arlington, VA – The National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) joyfully proclaims that 40 Catholic schools will receive the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for 2020. Of 50 schools recognized in the private school category, Catholic schools earned 40 of the coveted awards. The U.S. Department of Education formally will recognize the 317 public and 50 private schools at an awards ceremony at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. on November 12 and 13, 2020.

"In a year that has been filled with many challenges, this is affirmation that Catholic schools work," said NCEA Interim President/CEO Kathy Mears. "Academic excellence and faith-filled ministry are a combination that Catholic school communities are proud of. These 40 schools represent the highest level of dedication and achievement found in Catholic education nationwide."

The National Blue Ribbon Program has honored and recognized great American public and private elementary, middle and high schools since 1982. As many as 420 schools can be nominated each year. This year, 317 schools were recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools. The Council for American Private Education (CAPE) nominates the private schools for the award and the states’ commissioner of education nominates the public schools. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program serves three main purposes: to identify the highest achieving schools in the country; to make criteria available to all schools to help them evaluate their current quality status and uncover areas for improvement; and, perhaps most importantly, to facilitate the exchange of information between the award-winning schools and those looking for solutions to problems. More information on the program can be found at the U.S. Department of Education website.
