NCEA Board Chair Bishop George V. Murry, SJ, Steps Down

The Most Reverend Bishop George V. Murry, SJ, Bishop of Youngstown, will turn over responsibilities to vice chair Angela Dinger.

Arlington, VA — The National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) announced today that the chairman of the board, Bishop George V. Murry, SJ, will resign his position effective December 8, 2017. The board of directors has unanimously voted its approval and has designated board leadership to vice chair Angela Dinger. Ms. Dinger is senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of William H. Sadlier, Inc.

Bishop Murry informed the board of directors at the December 4 board meeting, citing the pressing demands of his August appointment as chair of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee Against Racism. Bishop Murry, whose term as board chair was scheduled to end July 2018, explained that the work of the Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism has increased exponentially as the need to confront racism is critical, leaving him to conclude this succession plan is in the best interest of NCEA.

"Words cannot express what an honor and a pleasure it has been for me to lead the NCEA board," said Bishop Murry. "Beginning with inviting Dr. Tom Burnford to become the new president/CEO, to the re-formation of the board as a governance board, the recruitment of our current board members, the development of a strategic plan and a reinvigorated relationship with superintendents across the nation, I am convinced that NCEA is on the right track to achieve great success."

Dr. Burnford commented: "NCEA and its members have been blessed with the vision and dedication Bishop Murry brought to the board. I am extremely grateful for his service to the Gospel of Jesus Christ to strengthen Catholic school communities across the country."

"It has been an honor and a joy to work alongside Bishop Murry," said Ms. Dinger. "Our board’s greatest challenge and privilege is to guide and support NCEA as it furthers the mission of Catholic schools. The prayers of the board and its members go with Bishop Murry as he confronts the sin of racism in our society today."

Dr. Burnford, Ms. Dinger and the NCEA Board of Directors will begin the search immediately for a bishop to assume the chairmanship in July.
