Prayers for Lasting Change

NCEA shares the grief and weariness of a nation, a city, a school caught in gun violence.

Arlington, VA – The National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) acknowledges the nation’s struggle to find common ground that will initiate a path to check gun violence and help strengthen school safety. Healing prayers are offered for all of those affected by the recent violence at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas.

In the wake of another school shooting, NCEA joins the community of Catholic schools and the Catholic Church in an effort to find a national call to action to curb gun violence and especially for the care and protection of all school communities.

NCEA President/CEO Dr. Thomas Burnford said, "We have been here before and as much as we pray we will not witness another horror such as the recent one in Santa Fe, we again implore politicians and leaders to work harder, yes tirelessly, to help change this course of senseless violence. Along with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and a myriad of other likeminded organizations we are dedicated to peacebuilding and reasonable firearm legislation, restorative justice and access to comprehensive health care."

NCEA continues to maintain resources on school safety and gun violence. A prayer service is available on the NCEA website. Recent blog contributions from Cari White, director of Campus Ministry at St. Edward High School in Lakewood Ohio and Jodee Blanco, best-selling author of Please Stop Laughing at Me, on the topic also are available on NCEATalk, a Catholic School Education Blog.
