NAEP 2005: National Assessment of Educational Progress (Nation's Report Card)

In October 2005, the National Center for Education Statistics released the report of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results for reading and math in grades 4 and 8. Due to an insufficient number of private schools participating in the assessment, NAEP was not able to report a "private school category" of results. However, two groups, Catholic and Lutheran schools, did meet the required threshold of 85% participation by selected schools, and those results are reported. A summary of the scale scores and percentages of students performing at or above four achievement levels is provided below.

Scale Scores: ratings on a scale of 0-500

Achievement Levels:

  1. below basic (not defined, but less than partial mastery)
  2. basic (partial mastery of fundamental skills and knowledge)
  3. proficient (solid academic performance)
  4. advanced (superior performance)
