2022 NAEP Reading and Mathematics National Assessment of Educational Progress (Nation's Report Card)

On October 24, 2022, the National Center for Education Statistics released the report of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results for Reading and Mathematics in grades 4 and 8. Catholic school students outperformed their public school peers coming out of the pandemic. A summary of the average scale score (ranging from 0-500) and the percentage of students performing at the four achievement levels is provided below:

Achievement Levels

  • below basic (not defined, but less than partial mastery)
  • basic (partial mastery of fundamental skills and knowledge)
  • proficient (solid academic performance)
  • advanced (superior performance).
