As immigrants from Croatia came to America to work in steel mills and mines, many organized a church in Pittsburgh to nurture their faith and preserve their language and customs. Thus St. Nicholas Church was established in 1895, notably the first Croatian Church in America. In 1937, the pastor of St. Nicholas commissioned artist Maxo Vanka to create a series of murals to tell the story of the Croatians who left their native lands to seek a better life.  The evocative murals also capture Vanka’s strong belief about the futility of war and his sadness about the destruction of the motherland.  After experiencing the sobering power of these artistic treasures, participants will travel to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church to appreciate its majestic architecture, nestled in the neighborhood of Polish Hill. Striking for its soaring central dome and two smaller side domes, its eight altars, high altar and pulpit carved from Spanish White Oak and edged in 23 karat gold, its 53 stained glass windows, and its twelve-foot-high cross topping the edifice, Immaculate Heart testifies to the glory of God present amid our ordinary life.

Stroll the streets of Pittsburgh’s ethnic marketplace as you visit two landmark Catholic Churches in the historic Strip District. Starting at St. Patrick’s Church, participants will experience the first Catholic Church of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, dedicated in 1811.  This charming spot is striking for its second level chapel, reached by ascending the Holy Stairs (a devotion done on one’s knees) or walking up the vestibule stairs. The Holy Stairs are a replica of those housed today in Rome which are believed to be the very ones our Lord was dragged upon during his Passion. Moving on to St. Stanislaus Church founded in 1875, participants will visit one of the first Polish parishes in the city and a beloved spot for tourism, weddings, and even notable guests such as St. John Paul II who graced this Historic Landmark with his presence as a cardinal in 1969.

Join others for an otherworldly experience of the majestic Immaculate Heart of Mary Church modeled after St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Anthony’s Chapel which houses the largest collection of saint relics in the world outside of the Vatican. Immaculate Heart of Mary, dedicated in 1905, is striking for its soaring central dome and two smaller side domes, its eight altars, high altar and pulpit carved from Spanish White Oak and edged in 23 karat gold, its 53 stained glass windows, and its twelve-foot-high cross topping the edifice.  Nestled in the neighborhood of “Polish Hill”, Immaculate Heart testifies to the glory of God present in ordinariness of life. Traveling to St. Anthony Chapel which was dedicated in 1883, participants will learn about some of the lives of the thousands of apostles, virgins, martyrs, confessors and missionaries, whose relics are housed in this holy dwelling of grace.  Additionally, visitors will be inspired by the near-life sized wood carved stations of the Cross, also featured in this special destination of pilgrimage.
